Our comrades are hard at work on the 23rd José Martí Brigade in Cuba, problems with energy and connectivity caused by the medieval siege upon Cuba by the United States has meant that getting videos and photos back to Britain has been difficult, but we have managed to receive some regardless. “We heard from farmers at a Cuban state farm who led a revolutionary chant saluting their Commander-in-Chief, Fidel Castro, just days from his celebrated centenary in socialist Cuba.
Comrades from Rock Around the Blockade and RCG took part in voluntary work at a Cuban state farm in solidarity with the revolution, as part of the José Martí brigade! We learnt about how the state organises farming in Cuba and the revolutionary commitment of the farm’s workers.”
“Just days before his Centenary, we joined the Union of Young Communists (UJC) in Havana as they hosted Colleción Revolutión, a revolutionary compilation of Fidel Castro’s works by Ocean Sur. We then joined an action laying flowers at the José Martí statue, honouring his legacy and contribution to the Cuban Revolution!”
Today we visited the Che Guevara monument in Santa Clara, Cuba – a site that pays homage to the revolutionary life, history and example of Comandante Che Guevara.
Beneath the monument lies the revolutionary sanctuary, the final resting place of Che and his comrades who gave their lives fighting imperialism in Bolivia. After Che was murdered by US-backed forces in 1967, his remains were hidden in an attempt to erase his revolutionary legacy. But history could not be buried. In 1997, Cuba brought Che home. Today, an eternal flame, originally lit by Fidel Castro, burns in their memory, a symbol that the struggle for liberation cannot be extinguished. We also visited the Armoured Train Monument, where in December 1958 Che and the revolutionary vanguard forces defeated Batista’s US-backed dictatorship by derailing an armoured train carrying weapons and soldiers. This decisive victory helped secure the triumph of the Cuban Revolution on 1 January 1959. Standing on the liberated soil of socialist Cuba, we remember that revolutions are made by ordinary people who refuse exploitation and oppression.
This the threat that Cuba poses to imperialism, a country that has dared to resist, revolt and rebel. Just yesterday the US imposed further sanctions on Cuban individuals and entities. During our time in Cuba, the working-class masses have assured us that Cuba will not surrender. The struggle against imperialism continues.
