Vilma Espin, 1930-2007. To mark the death of the revolutionary leader of the Cuban Women's Federation (FMC) we reproduce an article from 1989, in which she talks about the prospects for womens liberation. Espin was a committed member of the Cuban Communist Party's Central Committee, and a member of the Council of State of Cuba. She played an active role in the 26th July Movement before the revolution, and was a founding member of the FMC, an organisation which has developed to include more than 3.5 million Cuban women. What she helped Cuba to achieve stands as an inspiration to socialists and oppressed people everwhere.

'We are experiencing an exceptional moment in history. Many thought that the demise of the socialist block and the collapse of the Soviet Union would spell the end for the international revolutionary movement... In the eyes of the world, the so-called ?rusade on terrorism is unavoidably heading down the path to a humiliating defeat.' General Raul Castro, Second Sectetary of the Cuban Communist Party and acting President of Cuba in Fidel Castro's illness, speaks on the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces. At an enormous rally in Havana the Cuban masses marched defiantly in defence of their revolution, at the same time celebrating the 80th birthday of Fidel Castro.
Cubans debate productive problems under socialism. "In Cuba, a developing country, socialism was not born to a highly developed capitalist nation, as Karl Marx had described. We came into an underdeveloped economic structure that takes very long to change. The good news is, our socialist property can be planned, and therefore you have a long-term strategy in your hands." In the past year Cuba has entered a process of self-criticism aimed at wiping out corrupt and bureaucratic tendencies. Here we have a series of three articles produced in Juventud Rebelde, showing how the Cubans are taking a hard look at their system and involving all of society in the search for solutions as they strive to build socialism.
'An act of genocide' Speaking at the UN, Cuban Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque put forward Cuba's position on the economic war waged against Cuba by the US. Shortly after Roque's speech 183 countries voted to lift the blockade, with only the US and its stooges - Israel, Marshall Islands and Palau - voting against. The US, of course, has a veto.

One of the great lessons of the Cuban Revolution over the past 43 years has been that building socialism is a process, not something immutable and finished. It is a lesson completely lost on the bourgeois and sectarian mindset of a British left for whom the achievements built by and with the Cuban people are somehow never quite socialist enough. JIM CRAVEN examines the issues.
US promotes terrorism against Cuba A Cuban who beat up his family, hijacked a plane and flew into the arms of the Miami mafia, has received a hero's welcome in the USA under the Cuban Adjustment Act, which stimulates emigration by giving automatic residential status to any Cuban who reaches US borders illegally.
If you think it is bad here... By the end of 2001 United States prisons held a total of 1,962,220 prisoners and in total nearly 6.6 million people were on probation, in prison or jail, or on parole. This is 3.1% or one in 32 of all adult residents. This is the prison system that the Miami 5 are being held in.
