Internationalism and solidarity with oppressed nations has been a hallmark of the Cuban Revolution since its triumph in 1959. This film, with rare footage of Africa’s most prominent revolutionaries such as Kwame Nkrumah, Sekou Toure, Agostinho Neto, Samora Machel, Amilcar Cabral, chronicles Cuba’s support for liberation movements in Africa in the 1970s and 80s, and their contribution to the fight against racism and imperialism. In particular, the victory at Cuito Cuanavale where Cubans fought alongside Angolans to successfully defeated an invasion by Apartheid South African forces.
